Melanie C
Melanie C is the Spice Girl who is furthest into her solo career. Melanie C's first solo attempt was a collaboration with Bryan Adams on his song "When You're Gone" which was released as a single on December 2, 1998 and is also on Bryan's album On A Day Like Today which was released October 27, 1998. Melanie's second song was entitled "Ga Ga". It is a song which proves Melanie C has a "rock chick" edge to her. The song was first available on the Big Daddy soundtrack which was released on June 22, 1999.

Melanie C's first solo album entitled Northern Star was released on October 18th, 1999 in the UK, and November 2nd, 1999 in the US. Melanie C is the first Spice Girl to have a solo album! Most of the album was produced primarily by Rick Rubin and William Orbit, who also produced Madonna's Ray Of Light album. The album consists of 12 tracks and the music varies from indie rock songs, to lovely ballads. "Goin' Down" was the first single off the album and was released on September 27, 1999. It made it to #4 on the singles charts. The second single released is for the title track ballad "Northern Star". It was released on November 22, 1999 and made it to #2 on the singles charts. The third single off the album was the light pop/r&b song "Never Be The Same Again" which features rapper Lisa "Left-Eye" Lopes. "Never Be The Same Again" was released on March 20, 2000 and debuted at #1 on the singles charts! Melanie's fourth single was "I Turn To You" released on August 7th, 2000. The single mix was much more of a dance version then the album mix. "I Turn To You" entered the singles charts at #1, and also climbed to #1 in the US Dance/Club Chart! The last single released from Northern Star, "If That Were Me", was released as a charity single on November 27th, 2000. Melanie has done a lot of touring since her debut album. Her first tour was a massive worldwide effort as she visited 11 countries in one month. She then embarked on a more extensive European tour, followed by a small tour of America & Canada. She finished up with a few more European gigs. Melanie has begun writing on her 2nd solo album, including working on a new version of her fan-favorite tune "Independence Day" for an upcoming soundtrack. Melanie B
Melanie Janine Brown Hot on the heels of Melanie C is none other then Melanie B! Mel B's first solo release was a song called "I Want You Back" which is featured on the soundtrack for the movie "Why Do Fools Fall In Love" and is also available as a UK single. The song features Missy Elliot and was recorded in Missy's New York City studio at the end of June 1998 while Spice Girls were on tour. "I Want You Back" was released on the Why Do Fools Fall In Love soundtrack on September 8, 1998. The UK single was released on September 14, 1998 and soon made it to #1. Melanie's next single was a cover of "Word Up", originally done by Cameo in 1986. The song appeared on the soundtrack to Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me. It was also released as a UK single on June 28, 1999. The single debuted at #14 which it never beat. The single contains a B-Side track called "Sophisticated Lady" which features Emma Bunton on backing vocals as well as a new rapper called Dexter. "Sophisticated Lady" gives us another impression of Mel G's solo style. Both tracks are produced by Timbaland.

Melanie B's first solo album entitled Hot was released on October 9th, 2000 in the UK, and has no release date set for the US at this time. The album has 11 tracks and is mostly an R&B album. It was produced by Jimmy Jam, Terry Lewis, Teddy Riley and features Sisqo, and "I Want You Back" featuring Missy Elliot is also on the album. The first single from the album was "Tell Me" and is a bash on former husband Jimmy Gulzar. "Tell Me" was released on September 25th and entered the singles chart at #4, which it topped out at. The second single from Hot was "Feels So Good", and was released on February 19th 2001. "Lullaby", which was out June 4th, is the last single she released, because it didn't match their expectations, Melanie was dropped by Virgin Records (or she left them depending on which story you want to believe). She is now looking for a new label with a specific urban A&R department, in the meantime she hosted a TV show titled "This Is My Moment" and worked on a documentary about VooDoo. Although she is expected to sign with a new label this year, she's not going to do anything music-wise in 2002 to concentrate on her TV career.

Emma
Emma Bunton is really busy with her own solo songs. She released her album "A Girl Like Me" on April 16th 2001, introduced by her country-style-single "What Took You So Long" which was on #1 for 2 weeks. The album features some work on some tracks by Bryan Adams. Emma has previously released a collaboration single with Tin Tin Out entitled "What I Am". The single was released on November 1st, 1999. Emma has performed this song with Tin Tin Out numerous times. Emma's first non-Spice Girls performance was with Rod Stewart when she sang "Tonight's The Night" with him live on An Audience With Rod Stewart on May 30, 1998. Emma also performed "Don't Go Breaking My Heart" with Ronan Keating of Boyzone at the Wicked Women concert in 1999, which raised funds for a breast cancer charity. Emma gave us a sample of what she can do by herself when she contributed a song entitled "Free Up Your Mind" to the Pokemon movie soundtrack which was released on November 9th, 1999.

Emma's latest attempts were her 2nd single off her debut, "Take My Breath Away" which was out on August 27th and charted at #5; and her 3rd single "We're Not Gonna Sleep Tonight" was released on December 10th and charted at #20. While her later singles may not have done as well as expected, she will remain the first Spice Girl to have had a #1 for 2 consecutive weeks. Emma has let on that she has decided to go into the studio and work on another album.

Victoria
Victoria Caroline Beckham Victoria is the last Spice Girl to embark on solo music. She just released her solo-album "Victoria Beckham" which she worked 1 1/2 year on. For a long time she had no plans to do solo music. After much thought, she finally decided to go ahead and try a solo career. In her first non-Spice effort, Victoria joined UK underground group True Steppers on a song called "Out Of Your Mind". The track was played on radio for three weeks before it was revealed that the vocals on the track were Victoria's! Victoria wanted it to be a surprise. "Out Of Your Mind" was released as a UK single on August 14th, 2000. It faced a bitter battle with Spiller's track "Groovejet(If This Ain't Love)" featuring lyrics by Sophie Ellis-Bextor. As one of the most heated singles battles in history, "Groovejet" amazingly ended up winning at the last minute, after trailing "Out Of Your Mind" all week in sales, "Out Of Your Mind" entered the singles chart at #2. Victoria did a ridiculous amount of promotion the week that the single was releasd, including many radio and television interviews, signings, and performances at Party In The Park as well as in Ibiza!

Her first single from her self-titled album was "Not Such An Innocent Girl", released September 17th. Of course media had to make a chart-battle out of it, this time it was Kylie Minogue's "Can't Get You Out Of My Head" which she was up against. Suprisingly, Victoria only made #6 while Kylie topped the charts. The album itself containing 12 tracks was released on October 1st (again being up against Kylie), getting to #10 in the first week. Victoria's 2nd single was "A Mind of its Own." She did promotion for the single by performing some acoustic sets - which always gets 2 thumbs up from fans! It was just released on February 11th, and it's looking to be another top 10 entry from Mrs. Beckham! Well done!
